Wine in the Vendée

Hundreds of wine growers established in a limited area have launched themselves into the great adventure of wine producing under the banner the "Fiefs Vendéens".

This movement officially started in 1963 with the creation of the label “Les Anciens Fiefs du Cardinal”, afterwards renamed “Vins de Pays des Fiefs Vendeens” in 1973, and finally achieving the right to produce the Crus de Mareuil, Brem sur Mer, Chantonnay, Vix and Pissotte under the mark “Vins Delimites de Qualite Superior” (VDQS)  in 1984. Since February 2011 they benefit from the AOC

The different personalities of these wines... White wine that’s fresh and light, Rose that’s perfect for accompanying fish and seafood and a rather remarkable Red wine, highly respected.

Benefitting the from the Vendee sunshine, more than the national average, the White, Rose and Red produced by the four regions of the Vendee create wine with a delicate bouquet and an original, strong  aroma.

In the higher region of Mareuil; Gamay , Cabernet  or Pinot Vines create a wine with a fruity nose and an aroma of cassis. The wines based in the lower region of Brem combined with vines from Groleau  gris and Chenin create clear fresh wine that often has a discreet aroma of apples.

Further South East, the small vineyards of Vix and Pissotte produce a wine with a generous nature! Originally the same Vines as the other regions but combined with Sauvignon for Vix and Melon de Bourgogne for Pissotte.

You can of course visit many different vineyards....but La Garangeoire are delighted to suggest a visit to the Mareuil Vineyards and the Jean Mourat “Cave”. Please, just  ask for details.
